  • Some locations may only be activated as "cooling" or "warming" centers during periods of extreme heat/cold deemed by your town/city. *See more about extreme temperatures below.


  • Hours of operation may change. Many sites set their days/hours for each weather emergency. In addition, many sites are closed on federal holidays or other observances.


  • Many splashpads and community pools can offer relief from the heat but be aware that some may have an entrance fee.

*Extreme temperatures can be defined as those far outside the normal ranges for our climatic region. It’s all relative to our climatic region, and climate change is altering weather patterns. Extreme heat is generally a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which often includes high humidity. More specifically it is often defined as a period of 2 or more consecutive days above 90°F. Extreme cold is generally a prolonged period of very low temperatures and wind chill that can increase dangerous conditions. However, it’s important to check the hazard mitigation plan in your town/city for specific information and guidance.
